Chapter Nineteen

As Bethany’s closed eyelids started to glow an obnoxious shade of bright orange, she closed them even tighter, clinging to sleep with all her might. But she couldn’t squeeze her eyes this tightly for long without causing her forehead to ache. With a sigh, she opened them.

And immediately hissed in a breath as a white-hot shard of morning sun seared her retinas.

“Balls,” she muttered, throwing her arm over her head and flopping to her side. Her hand automatically smoothed over the sheets, headed to the other side of the bed. When her palm felt nothing but cool cotton, she woke up.

James.

Last night came rushing back in, and she closed her eyes again and groaned. “What did I do?” she asked herself in a whisper.

Immediately, her eyes shot open, and she scoured the inside of the cabin. Indeed, she was alone, and James hadn’t heard her talking to herself. She blew out a breath.

She pressed her knees together and winced at the sticky feeling between her legs from her intense arousal last night. When she ran her hand across her stomach, she also discovered that James hadn’t done the best job of cleaning her up with his bone-dry flannel shirt last night.

Ugh. She needed a shower. And about a gallon of coffee if she was going to face this day without losing her mind. God, she would kill for Starbucks.

Oh yeah. The water system had gone boom last night. No shower. No coffee unless she melted snow.

“Fucking wilderness.” She threw back the covers and stomped from the bed, scooping up her underwear and jabbing her legs through them before pulling on her jeans. She scowled as she thudded her way over to the kitchen and scrounged around for something big enough to heat up enough snow for a sponge bath. When she found a big soup pot, she grunted in ill-tempered victory and made her way to the door, flinging it wide.

Bethany immediately found James. He was walking from the water shed toward the cabin, flipping his collar up to cover his neck. She froze, but her pot clanged against the doorframe, filling the morning air with a resounding gong.

James’s head shot up, and the moment he saw her standing there, he beamed.

Bethany found it suddenly difficult to breathe.

“You’re up!” He added speed to his gait and was in front of her in seconds. Without hesitation, he slid an arm around her waist and hauled her into his considerable chest. Her pot bounced against his thigh, but he ignored it, swooping down and pressing an ice-cold kiss to her lips.

When he pulled back, he was grinning again, but she was pinned in shock. The morning after. She’d never done one before. She and her partners had parted ways in the night: either he leaving her apartment or she leaving his.

James’s grin slipped and then faded. “Uh,” he said. “I’m allowed to kiss you, right?”

“Yep,” Bethany answered. Yep? Damn James and his expressive angel face. She meant no! No kisses that made her cease to think.
